Arcadia
Arcadia, with its large, lushly landscaped lots, is one of the premier locations in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Spread out between both cities, this neighborhood was built on old citrus groves. A few fragments of the old orange and citrus groves can be seen today, nestled between large luxury mansions, some of which were built in the early 1900s.
This popular neighborhood frequently tops the lists of places to live in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Known for its plush landscaping, dynamic culture and dining, this walkable area is close to many things that make Scottsdale and Phoenix a popular destination in the southwest. It’s one of the places to be!
Activities
If you can’t decide whether you want to focus on retail therapy or hit the trails for an outdoor adventure, don’t worry, as Arcadia is close to great locations to do both. The popular Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak are just north of the neighborhood. Arcadia is also one of the more popular areas among cyclists too.
Renamed for Lori Piestewa, a Hopi Indian who was the first Native American woman to die in combat while serving in the U.S. Military, and the first woman serving in the U.S. Military to die in the Iraq War, Piestewa Peak is 2,680 feet high and is must visit spot for any moderately experienced hiker. Known for its abundance of colorful desert wildflowers, the peak is home to cacti, mesquite, desert lavender and giant sage trees, and of course, all the desert wildlife you’d expect, including western diamondbacks, coyotes, hawks and jackrabbits among others.
Camelback Mountain, a local landmark, gets its name from its shape which looks like a kneeling camel. It’s also a popular hiking and rock-climbing destination among both locals and visitors to the area. The two trails to the peak (at 1,280 feet) are both considered strenuous.
For the shoppers in the mix, a few spots to hit include the Biltmore Fashion Park, an open-air shopping and dining complex at the edge of Arcadia. This is high-end shopping at its best, in a lush garden setting in the middle of the desert. The Scottsdale Fashion Square, one of the largest shopping malls in the country, has high-end shopping and dining, a movie theater and non-profit performing arts theater.
