Winter weather is great here in Phoenix, with an average high temp of 65 and lows in the 40s. It’s perfect outside for trekking through the desert or playing a little golf. And many of our Phoenix winter rentals have heated pools, spas, and fire pits to take advantage of those cool evenings. All of our rentals have decks, porches or patios that make enjoying the desert scenery and mild weather easy. So, take a quick dip in the pool, then head over to the fire to roast some marshmallows. Your kids will be talking about this holiday for years to come.
Christmas wouldn’t be the same without holiday lights, and there are several light shows in the immediate area you won’t want to miss. The kids will love the animals at the Phoenix Zoo and the entire family will enjoy the festivities after dark when the zoo lights up with millions of colorful lights during its ZooLights festival.
Or drive through the Illumination Symphony of Light and experience millions of bright lights synchronized to holiday music. Stock up on holiday snacks and drinks (bring them along or buy at the concession stand), pile the kids in the car and get ready for the “world’s largest animated drive through holiday light show.” A mile long, with over two million LED lights that are synchronized with your car radio to your favorite holiday songs, this is a seasonal favorite for kids of all ages. This is sure to get you in the holiday spirit!
The adults in the crowd will love the Desert Botanical Gardens’ Night of the Luminaries, where you can wander desert paths sparkling with hand-lit luminaries, listening to live music and sipping hot cocoa. The Garden’s pathways are lit with over 8,000 luminaria bags, and a variety of live musicians and entertainers play nightly. The combination of live, seasonal music and twinkling luminaries turn the garden’s trails into a magical desert wonderland. It’s a lovely, romantic way to start the holiday season.
Missing all that snow and ice? Amazingly enough, you’ve actually got a couple of options where you can let loose your inner free skater. Head over to the Westgate Entertainment District (in Glendale). With nightly snowfalls, public ice skating, ice skating performances, visits from Old St. Nick, and horse-drawn carriage rides, this is an outing the entire family will enjoy. A holiday tree lighting and menorah lighting are also part of the holiday festivities. Show off your skating skills at the rink at CitySkate. This public rink in Phoenix’s urban park – City Scape – also has a tree lighting ceremony to add a little holiday sparkle to downtown.
The Ahwatunkee Festival of Lights has something for every member of your family to enjoy – carnival rides, a beer garden, Marketplace Street Fair and a Harley Parade. In South Phoenix, the Ahwatukee Festival of Lights features over a million LED lights spread over several main streets – cacti, trees and buildings are lit with bright white lights.
While Christmas is certainly focused around religious themes and family, it’s also a time for rejoicing in our lives and the world around us. Enjoy holiday services complete with holly and poinsettias, candlelight and bells, carols and hymns, and maybe some incense. Local churches welcome visitors to their holiday services at Christmas, and what better way to connect with the world than to take a hike along the Historic Apache Trail or Echo Canyon. Parsons Villas has rentals that are close to trailheads as well as villas that are on the desert’s edge. You can view our amazing desert sunsets and sunrises from your lovely rental villa, snuggled up to the fire pit, or walk out into the desert and be surrounded by it all. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the desert, and contemplate the holiday season, and the end of another year. This is why you came to the Southwest.
Food and Family
You won’t have to miss out on the traditional Christmas dinner either. Local resorts and restaurants will be offering holiday meals, and you can choose from traditional menus or try something new.
Or, reserve a meal from a local restaurant, pick it up, and have that perfect family holiday feast out on the patio overlooking the desert. Many of our rentals have outdoor kitchens and grills just waiting for you to put a new southwestern twist to your traditional holiday meal. Impress your family by grilling a prime rib roast or rack of lamb. Want to keep things easy? No problem. All of our villa’s kitchens are fully equipped to ensure that you’ll be able to cook your family’s holiday meal with ease. What a great new tradition!
