Set Up the Classroom

While you can pack everything up and bring it all with you, there is an easier option. Rent what you need while you’re out here. Have it all delivered, then either set it up yourself or have everything installed for you. Book one of our larger vacation rental homes in Scottsdale AZ and set up that game or TV room as a classroom. You can rent desks and chairs as well as computer equipment. Give us a call beforehand to discuss the logistics and the best rentals for this option, or for rental company recommendations.

Our Scottsdale vacation home rentals feature free Wi-Fi, so you can set their classroom up pretty much anywhere. You may want to set them up on the kitchen or dining room table –right in the middle of everything (where you can keep an eye on them) and where they can spread out. Don’t worry about needing the table; our rentals come with several eating areas and you’re probably going to be dining outside on the back porch where you can enjoy the desert scenery anyway.

Move the Classroom Outside

Move the classroom outdoors! Do math and science experiments outside around the pool where there’s more room. Here are a few experiments to get you started.

Have your kids build self-supporting towers or bridges out of pencils, drinking straws or books, or challenge your kids to build a platform with cardboard and paper cups that can support their weight. Try different materials to find the strongest –egg cartons, cardboard–whatever they can find.

Label water balloons with numbers or letters, then have the kids throw them onto the corresponding numbers or letter you’ve put around the backyard. Let the kids build their own lava lamps or try the old favorite –the tornado in a bottle trick. Or show them another oldie but goodie –the (hard-boiled) egg in the bottle.

Let the kids build their own guitar and drums out of different materials from around the house. After a few cautionary words, show them the basics, then let them build their own catapult or slingshot. Or take it up a skill level and make a bow with arrows.

Take the kids on a hike—the one who finds the most different types of birds or animals gets a prize. Have kids hunt for different types of rocks, animal tracks, or cacti. Learning about biology, geology and our environment was never this much fun before!

After Class

Keeping the kids occupied after school hours won’t be an issue at all! There are plenty of trails to hike or ride mountain bikes or even ATVs. They can learn new skills too –rock climbing or even rappelling. Give the kids a treat and go horseback riding along the trails.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve has several winding desert trails waiting to be explored, with trailheads scattered throughout the area. Remind the kids to watch for desert dwelling wildlife while they trek over the rocky trails. Lizards and rattlers love to sun themselves on rocks too!

If there are any train lovers in your gang, McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park has playgrounds, a model railroad exhibit, trains to ride and a restored antique carousel. Your kids will also enjoy the interactive exhibits at the Musical Instrument Museum, as they can learn about instruments from around the world and even play a few.

Most of our Scottsdale vacation rentals either have their own swimming pools or have access to one. Your kids can spend their off time cooling off in the pool or playing a friendly game of Marco Polo while you sit in the comfy poolside loungers and watch.

And after a long hard day of classes, with maybe some hiking and definitely some swimming thrown in, and after you’ve fed your hungry horde, get the fire pit going and hand out the makings for s’mores! Snuggle up and teach the kids about the constellations and stars. Or head inside to watch your family’s favorite movie on one of the flat-screen TVs scattered throughout your vacation rental homes in Scottsdale AZ.
