Scary Fun During Halloween in Phoenix

There are plenty of events and activities for the entire family at Halloween. Salt River Fields at Talking Stick will be hosting their Spooktacular Balloon Festival. Lots of hot air balloons and balloon rides, a pumpkin patch, music, food and drink, and a kids’ zone, plus the scary Spook Trail. Oh, and did we mention over 4,000 pounds of candy and fireworks? Treat the entire family to an exciting hot air balloon ride for some spectacular views of the surrounding desert, then hit the festival. It’ll be a Halloween they’ll never forget.

Fun for all ages, it’s the Phoenix Zoo’s Howl-O-Ween! Fun activities include a Carnival Midway, Character Meet & Greet, Extinct Animal Graveyard, Dr. Howls Science Lab and the spider web covered “Scareousel.” And don’t forget all those animals – lions, giraffes, sloths, orangutans, Asian elephants, jaguars and more! The zoo has animal interactions and entertaining events scheduled throughout the year that the kids will love. Come for the Halloween fun, but stay for all the animal fun.

Strange Garden at the Desert Botanical Garden is an evening of fun with strange pumpkin creatures and glowing creatures hidden along the desert trails, a monster bash, and costume contest. Kids 12 and under can take home a pumpkin from the patch! The Dia de los Muertos Celebration may be after our traditional holiday, but it’s still fun! At the Desert Botanical Gardens, this two-day festival has arts and crafts booths, traditional Mexican pastries, and everything you’ll need to enjoy your Day of the Dead. Don’t miss the Ofrenda Exhibit – these alters are specifically created by local artists for this exhibit. The Desert Botanical Gardens is a great way to learn about the Sonoran Desert, its history and inhabitants as you get some exercise, no matter what time of year you visit. Hike at your own pace along accessible trails winding through saguaro cacti and other indigenous plants as you make your way through the desert. Be sure to make the trek to the top of the Garden’s Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail for an amazing view of the surrounding desert and mountains.

Want something a little scarier for a Halloween AZ? Head to one of the areas haunted houses (suitable for 12 years and older). Enjoy Carnival Games, Mini Escape Games and spend the night at Fear Farm – if you dare! Among their attractions is the Haunted Corn Maze with twenty acres of twisty paths through prickly corn fields, where your nightmares are waiting for you. Remember all those scary movies with monsters and kids in old barns and corn fields? This is your chance to experience it yourself! It doesn’t get any scarier! And, the 13th Floor Haunted House has been featured on the Travel Channel, MTV and USA Today (they rate it one of the top five haunted houses in the country) and is scary fun. Their famous tilt room is a local favorite attraction. Find out for yourself why buildings don’t have a 13th floor!

Looking for free haunted fun? No worries. Drive on over to Phoenix Dead Rising, on North 30th Drive. Zombies, ghouls and the usual suspects take over the front yard and garage of an otherwise normal suburban home, as the ominous purple fog slowly spreads its tendrils around. And East Purdue Avenue in North Phoenix offers wicked games, torturous mazes, and creepy clowns among its Halloween decorations. Walk-throughs are free at both houses, but donations are appreciated.

Scary Good

Of course, all of our rentals have large flat screen TVs in almost every room and free Wi-Fi, so everyone can watch their own favorite horror flick.

Channel your inner Martha Stewart and whip up some popcorn balls and unique Halloween goodies for the family. Your villa’s fully equipped kitchen will make it easy and enjoyable as you decorate cookies, brownies and cupcakes with spiders, pumpkins, brain tops or mummy faces. Let your imagination run wild. And, don’t forget the spider ice for the kid’s drinks!

Take the fun outside and carve your own jack-o-lanterns out on the patio or go bobbing for apples. And what could be more fun than huddling around the fire pit, roasting weinies and marshmallows and telling scary stories? The weather is perfect at Halloween. Fall has arrived and the nights are cool; it’s just right for snuggling up to a fire.
