Our Guide to the Scottsdale Labor Day Weekend
May 8, 2019
Labor Day in the U.S. is officially the first Monday in September, but for most of us Labor Day is a long three-day weekend at the end of summer. This federal holiday celebrates the American Labor Movement and all the contributions American workers have made to the country over the years, but it’s the really the last gasp of summer. It’s the last, long weekend to party. If you’re in Scottsdale to celebrate a Scottsdale Labor Day Weekend, there are plenty of things to do.
Grab the entire family and head out to OdySea. Spend your Labor Day in Scottsdale in the cool indoor aquarium at the touch pools where you can interact with various rays and anemone, or step onto the Deep Ocean escalator as it takes you through the Sharks of the Deep aquarium. This is a fun way to see and learn about over 300 different fish and animal species. Where else can your kids touch a ray or get up close to a penguin?
Hit the water slides! It’s hot here in Scottsdale in the summer. Head to Big Surf Waterpark in Tempe (just ten minutes from Scottsdale) for waterslides and slippery fun or try the city-owned McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center. The aquatic center has four diving boards, a water slide, 600-foot lazy river, and interactive spray pad – everything you’ll need to cool down and have some fun.
Once the sun sets and the desert is cooling off, head out to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix for the last Flashlight Tour of the season. From 7pm to 9:30pm, walk down dark desert pathways armed with just a flashlight – the better to see all those night blooming plants and nocturnal animals scampering about. Lots of desert fun in the dark!
The kids will love McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park during the Scottsdale Labor Day weekend, a 30-acre park with a kid-sized railroad, a railroad museum and a vintage carousel. There’s a misted playground with plenty of shade and tables for that last summer picnic.
Or, start your weekend early and get a head start on those fall football games – Arizona State’s first game is against Kent State on Thursday, August 29th at their home stadium in Tempe. Go Sun Devils!
Pretty much every resort, hotel, bar and restaurant will be celebrating Labor Day in Scottsdale with their own particular brand of fun. Hawaiian luau? Rooftop vodka & BBQ party? Pool party? Dance club fun with live DJs? Just pick your favorite locale and head on over for one last, long summer party!
