Hike, jog or take a mountain bike ride along one of the many desert trails in the area. Wander through the towering saguaro, make your way around boulders along the rocky, dusty trails. This could be the time and place to get serious about rock climbing, rappelling or mountaineering.
Start at the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve, with over 120 miles of desert trails, it features accessible trails and designated rock climbing areas. The trails vary in length, difficulty, and terrain so there is a trail to fit every visitor’s taste and fitness level. Other trails to try are Pinnacle Peak Summit Trail in Pinnacle Peak Park and the Go John Trail in Cave Creek national Park. All the preserves and parked are packed with desert wildlife including roadrunners, snakes and lizards, and mule deer. Set up a friendly competition with the kids – who can see the most desert wildlife inhabitants! And many trails are pet-friendly, so you won’t have to leave your best friend at home.
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is great for families and railroad buffs and features several playgrounds, a model railroad exhibit, trains to ride, and a restored antique carousel. And there’s a covered, misted area for taking a short break from the long, hot afternoons.
Visit Old Town
Want to get back to civilization? Head to Old Town Scottsdale where you can spend days wandering through quaint shops, art galleries, and more! You can find everything from fine art to tacky souvenirs, and this historic western town is known worldwide as a destination for art lovers. And Scottsdale has one of the country’s best public art collections – you have to take a selfie in front of the iconic LOVE sculpture!
Old Town has a wide range of eating, drinking and entertainment establishments. Find five-star restaurants and local family diners, brew pubs and wine bars, sports bars and comedy bars, and more. Be sure to make at least one stop at the oldest bar in town, The Rusty Spur. Full of western fun, you never know who will stop by.
If you’re a history buff or love the old Wild West, plan on spending a few hours at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale Museum of the West. Right in the heart of Old Town, this small museum exhibits Western and Native American art, along with artifacts and cultural treasures including Old West cowboy gear, beautiful Hopi pottery and a wide variety of paintings and sculptures depicting western life, past and present.
