Old Town Life

The heart of Scottsdale, Old Town is the perfect destination for art lovers! You can find any type of medium and any art style here, from oils, pastels and watercolors, to glass, bronze, and wood sculptures. From contemporary, western-themed, Native American, or old world masters, and from fine art to fun, tacky souvenirs, it’s all here. And there are antiques, jewelry, buffalo hides and more! Make sure to schedule time on Thursday nights for the Scottsdale Art Walk when galleries are open to the public from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Browsing through the galleries is a perfect before-dinner activity!

Besides being well-known as a world-class art lover’s destination, Old Town is also known for its dining establishments and lively nightlife. There is an amazing variety of cuisines and cultures here in this tiny historic town – with choices of sushi to steak and tacos, farm-to-table, down-home cooking, and five-star dining. A few of our favorites include Franco’s Italian Caffe (upscale Italian and a Scottsdale tradition), Café Monarch (another Scottsdale tradition with an old-world setting and a four-course prix fixe menu made for romantic nights out), Citizen Pub House (award-winning, comfy old English pub with a great craft beer selection), Sel (Chef Brandon Levine of Food Network fame offers a prix fixe menu that is constantly changing but is always right on the mark), FNB (a quirky newcomer and a must-try) and Bootleggers Modern American Smokehouse (BBQ, what more do you need).

And the nightlife is the same. You can find wine bars, beer pubs, comedy clubs, sports bars, western bars, high energy electro-dance clubs and more when you stay in our villas for rent in Old Town Scottsdale. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: the Fox Cigar Bar – if you love sports, cigars, whiskey and bourbon, this is the place for you; Maya – this high spirited nightclub resembles a Mayan temple and the dancing and the DJs are legendary; and Coach House – this popular party spot gets busy early and the party lasts til the wee hours. Of course, you can’t come to the Old West without a trip to a cowboy bar – Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row and the Rusty Spur are two of the best.

Old Town Activities

Head to one of the local museums for a little culture and to cool down – the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Musical Instrument Museum and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West are all worth the trip. Western Spirit’s collections include sculptures by Frederick Remington and John Coleman, cowboy memorabilia (sheriff badges, spurs, knives, chaps, saddles and more), Old West and Native American Art and spectacular Hopi pottery.

Walk along the Scottsdale Waterfront in Old Town and make sure to visit the Soleri Bridge and Plaza. Designed by architect Paolo Soleri, the plaza connects Old Town with Scottsdale proper and is a bridge, gathering space and solar calendar, all-in-one. Or just spend the day browsing through all the lovely boutiques and shops in Old Town. Scottsdale has an amazing public art collection, and many pieces are scattered around Old Town. As you stroll around the town center, be on the lookout for “The Yearlings” by George-Ann Tognoni (an amazing bronze of galloping horses) and Passing the Legacy by Herb Mignery (a life-size bronze sculpture depicting Pony Express riders). Head to the nearby Scottsdale Civic Center Mall for a selfie in front of the iconic LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana.

Take a tour! Guided tours include foodie tours, happy hour tours, wine tours, a Public Art Walking Tour, Historic Old Town Walking Tour, the Ultimate Art & Culture Tour and more. Or, walk the Scottsdale Wine Trail or Ale Trail on your own. Pick a subject you like, then your favorite mode of transportation – you can walk, ride a golf cart, trolley or a Segway!
